Whoops - I got it right in the rest of the post - Thanks for pointing that out - must've have had an old school friend (by the name of DANIEL Cahill!) in my head when doing the tags on this post!
Thanks again!

I reckon you can see it the other way too, Roger - calling it 'Cambodian blues' gives respect to that culture and a framework for under-educated folks like me to quickly understand. It's not unconscious racism: racism is denigrating someone, not allying or linking them with the landmark musical waypoints of American music. If someone were to write 'a Cambodian attempt at blues' then we're getting in to bigotry/snobbery; if you tell a dumb honkey like me 'it's the Cambodian blues, they call it chapei' then you acknowledge I'm a whitey who's lost with Khmer terminology, but next time I hear the word I'll know what it means. You're not diminishing it or making it a subset - you're speaking in a language I understand. Until we're all talking Esperanto or Halliburton rebuilds the Tower of Babel, this is all we've got!

What an excellent point. I live in Cambodia and I tend to fall into those descriptive traps just because (I hope) I am trying to define styles of music so new to most people who have never heard them, but yes, I suppose I am drawing it back to our own collective cultural understanding as foreigners from a certain background when I speak with other foreigners.
I don't have to do that with my Khmer partner, however, so I don't.
Not sure how you get around it if you are trying to introduce such a rare and profound style of music as Master Kong Nay's to a Western audience - pariticularly via mainstream media. How would you explain it? It certainly has elements evocative of Blues, scat, and even musical standup improv. It's an amazing artform, however you try to explain it. The words and the wit of the artist are as vital as the music for it to really work.
On another note, the fact there are women learning this art now is absolutely fascinating. I would love to speak to them!
